Antoine Zerega, a flour miller from Lyon, France established America's first pasta factory in 1848 at 59 Front Street (per the 1897 Brooklyn City Directory) on the Brooklyn, NY waterfront. The power for the factory was provided by a single horse turning the mill stone and powering other equipment until it was replaced by steam and later electricity. The pasta was dried by spreading it on the roof under the sun. The small factory grew into a six story factory (shown below) and moved to a modern plant in 1950.
