About This Site

In 1998 I created the first version of the Zerega Family Genealogy site based on my sister Barb's high school history fair project. The Vermeylen, Marren, Malone, Moresi, Kent, Rea, Donovan,Foerster, Sherman and Libaire families and other family genealogy enthusiasts have also provided great photos and genealogical information for this project which has grown to over 500 individual records. My great grandmother Mary Ann Cooney Zerega is pictured above.

Zerega Family Name

The family name of Zerega is probably derived from the hamlet of Dezerega near Genoa, Italy. Zerega Street in Bronx, New York is named after shipping magnate Augustus Di Zerega who purchased the land that became known as Ferry Point Park in 1850 with Jacob Lorillard a tobacco manufacturer. Celestine Zerega Donovan is pictured above.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle Archives

Another wonderful resource for Zerega Family history is he Brooklyn Eagle online archives. Events recorded in The Brooklyn Eagle include the 1899 wedding announcement of Elise Marie Zerega and Dr. James P. Glynn and a 1897 account of an entertainment program for the St. Vincent's Home for Boys organized by Inez Zerega. Many thanks to Mark Vermylen for passing on this information. Elise Zerega Glynn is pictured above.
